夏休み真っ最中の私がやってきたのは、三重県伊勢市。旅の最終目的地は、2000年以上の歴史をもつ伊勢神社。日本最古の歴史書「古事記」にも登場します。

I went to Ise City in Mie Prefecture during the summer holidays. The reason why I came was to visit Ise Shrine, which has a history dating back more than 2000 years. It appears in the oldest history book in Japan, "Kojiki".

参拝をしたあとは「おげ横丁」へ。絶対に立ち寄ると決めていたのが、伊勢名物「赤福」のお茶屋さん。

After praying, I went to "Okage Yokocho", a shopping street next to the shrine. My favourite is a cafe run by "Akafuku mochi". It is an institution of Ise City.

お目当ては、毎年夏の間だけ食べられる限定メニュー「赤福氷」。昭和36年、二見浦で海水浴のお客さんに出したのが始まりとのこと。夏に餅を売るには、最高のアイディア！

"Akafuku-Gori" is limited to the summer season. It started being served to beach-goers in 1961. It's the best way to sell mochi during the summer season!

いただきま〜す。抹茶蜜が甘くてほろ苦。想像以上に美味しくてビックリ！

Let's eat! The matcha syrup is bitter and sweet. It's much more delicious than I imagined!

氷の中からお餅&餡子がこんにちは。お餅を小さめにカットすることで、冷たい氷の中でも固まってしまわないよう工夫されているんです。

I found some pieces of mochi and adzuki. They cut the mochi into small pieces to keep it from hardening in the ice.

氷はサックリしたあとにスーッと溶ける、私の好きなタイプ。赤福の滑らかな漉し餡と良く合います。

I love how the ice is crunchy at first but then melts in your mouth. It goes well with the smooth texture of Akafuku's adzuki.

畳敷のベンチで神宮の緑に囲まれながら、小休憩にぴったり。神宮周辺にはこのお店の他に、2つの「赤福」直営の喫茶店があります。

You can take a short break on benchs made of tatami while being surrounded by nature. Akafuku has two other cafes around the shrine.
