闇夜に光る丸いネオン。自由が丘に来るたび密かに気になっていたビリヤード場の看板。こんな夜更けにやっているのかな？

The neon sign of the billiard hall glows in the dark night. It always catches my attention when I come to Jiyu-gaoka. Are they really open this late?

おじゃましま〜す！木製のビリヤード台や、教室みたいなフローリングがレトロで可愛い。聞いてみると創業1964年、60年以上続く老舗でした。

Hello! I love the nostalgic atmosphere, especially the wooden billiard table and the elementary school-like flooring. They opened in 1964 and have been in business for over 60 years now.

初心者でも大丈夫。希望すれば、プロ選手が基本から教えてくれます。そういえばビリヤードってちゃんと習ったことないかも。

Beginners are welcomed. If you ask, a professional player will teach you. I think I have never learned how to play pool before.

構えや目線、撞き方のコツなど、少し教わるだけで全然違う。利き目の下にキューが来るように構えると、あら不思議。真っ直ぐ撞けた！

The stance, tips for lining up and making a shot, and so on... Even if it was just a short while, I was able to feel improvement. When I hold the stick under my dominant eye, I can shoot straight. Oh, it was easier than I thought!

ボールを並べるとき、三角形の木枠を使うのはもう古い。今はラックシートと呼ばれるもので球を並べるんだって。便利！

It is out of date to use a rack to set up the balls. Now people use this, a rack sheet. They are more accurate.

この人はビリヤードの神様、ポール・ニューマン。彼の主演映画「ハスラー」で世界中にビリヤードブームが到来！その頃は東京にもたくさんビリヤード場があったそう。

This man is Paul Newman. He played the lead role in the movie " The Hustler” and started a pool boom all over the world. There were many more billiard halls in Tokyo in those days.

レッスンの後は、いよいよ対戦！ 挑戦した種目はナインボール。練習の成果あって常連さん相手に互角の戦いができました。基本がわかると楽しさが全然ちがう！

After some lesson, I finally played a game of nine ball. I am glad that I could play at the same level as my opponent and show off what I learned.Basics are extremely important indeed.
