「あれ？こんなお店あったっけ？」馴染みのエリアから少し足を伸ばせば、そこには私の知らないTOKYOがたくさん。そんなまだ見ぬTOKYOとの出会いを求めて、お散歩へ出かけました。

If I go a little farther from my favorite areas, there is so much more TOKYO that I haven't yet found. So, I go out in search of new discoveries.

「渋谷・道玄坂」にある〈名曲喫茶ライオン〉にやってきました。昭和元年、今からなんと93年前に創業した東京を代表する純喫茶です。

I went to "Lion Cafe" in Shibuya on Dogenzaka Street. They opened in 1926 and it has been an iconic cafe in Tokyo ever since.

お邪魔しま〜す。朝11時にも関わらず、クラシック音楽がこだまする薄暗い店内。座席が全部おなじ方向を向いているし、なんだか不思議...。

Hello! Even at 11am, classical music echoes throughout the dimly lit cafe. All of the seats are facing the same direction. How mysterious!

実はここ、音楽を聴くための喫茶店。昔々、まだ映画館も家庭用オーディオプレーヤーもなかった時代、カップルのデートの定番スポットだったんですよ。2階には2人きりになれるボックス席も♪

Actually, many people come here for the music specifically. Long long ago, it was a popular date spot before the days of movie theaters or home stereo. On the second floor, there are box seats especially for couples.

お店の中央にでーん！と鎮座するのは3m近くある巨大なスピーカー。パイオニアに特注で作ってもらったそう。これは迫力ある！どんな音がするんだろう？

There are huge 3 meter tall speakers in the middle of the cafe order made by Pioneer. I want to hear what kind of impact these speakers can make.

クラシック音楽の愛好家には「自分のレコードをこのスピーカーで聴きたい」と言って、もってくる人もいるそう。レコードもってないけど、なんか気持ちわかるなぁ。もっていない人でも、リクエストすればお店にあるレコードから好きなクラシック音楽を流してくれるよ。

People who want to listen to their own classical records on these speakers can bring them in. I don't own any records, but I can understand why people would do this. Don't worry, even if you don't have any records, they take requests.

「どうして席が全部同じ方向を向いているんですか？」お店を営む現在85歳の石原けいこさんに聞いてみました。「音楽に集中できるようにです。お店の照明が暗くなっていたり、カーテンが閉まっているのもそのためなんです」とけいこさん。

I asked the 85 year old owner, Keiko Ishihara, why all of the seats are facing the same direction. She said it's to help you focus on the music. Also, the dim lighting and curtains are for the same reason.

とりあえず「朝っぽくて明るい曲お願いします！」とリクエストしてかけてもらったのはモーツァルト。イギリス仕込みのコーヒー片手に、しばし美しいしらべに浸りました。

I requested something bright and happy music for the morning. They chose Mozart. With a British style coffee in one hand, I immerse myself in the melody.
