クラシックやジャズを聴きながらコーヒーを嗜む場所、名曲喫茶。阿佐ヶ谷で41年づづく老舗〈VIOLON〉へ行ってきました。

A music cafe is a place where you can enjoy a cup of coffee while listening to classical music or jazz. I went to the cafe VIOLON that has been in Asagaya for 41 years.

かつてスピーカーやアンプを作る職人だったというオーナーの寺元さん。当初スピーカーの試聴室として作られたこの場所は、ウィーンのコンサートホール・ムジクフェラインを1/25サイズで再現しています。

The owner, Mr. Teramoto, used to be a craftsman who made speakers and amplifiers. Initially, this place was built as a listening room for speakers. This is a 1/25 scale reproduction of the Musikverein concert hall in Vienna.

船のような形のお店は、音が響くように床下と壁が空洞になっているから。素早く音がホール全体に広がって、クリアな残響が音を包むのが、いいホールの条件だと寺元さんが教えてくれました。

The store, shaped like a ship, has a hollow space under the floor for sound to echo. Mr. Teramoto told me that the conditions for a good hall are that the sound spreads quickly throughout the hall and that a clear reverberation surrounds the sound.

「お師匠さんに『音を勉強するんだったら、まず本物を聴かなきゃだめ。本場に行っていい演奏といいホールを聴いて回んなさい。音楽や芸術は頭で考えてもしょうがない』と言われて、20歳のときにフランス、イギリス、ドイツ、ウィーン、チェコなど巡りました」（寺元さん）。

“’If you want to study sound, listen to the real thing. Go to the real place, listen to a good performance, and see a good hall. Don't think about music and art in your head, feel it.’ That's what my teacher told me. So, when I was 20 years old, I traveled to France, England, Germany, Vienna, and the Czech Republic,” said Mr. Teramoto.

そのお師匠さんというのが、かつて中野にあった名曲喫茶クラッシックの店主であり画家でもあった美作七郎氏だったそうです。
「日銭がないと暮らしていけないから、喫茶店にしなさい」という美作さんの助言をもとに現在の喫茶店スタイルに。

The teacher was Mr.Shichiro Mimasaka, a painter and the owner of the music cafe Classic　that used to be located in Nakano.
“You can’t live without earning a daily living, so serve coffee in your listening room.”
Based on the advice from Mr. Mimasaka, this place became to the coffee shop.

大切に手入れしながら現在も、オープン当時と同じスピーカーと真空管を使用しているそう。そして毎月第3日曜日には、美作氏から譲り受けたという1925年製の蓄音機クレデンザで、SP盤レコードの演奏会も。ヴィンテージの蓄音機は、電力を一切つかいません。ゼンマイを巻いて、その戻る力で音が出ています。

They are still using the same speakers and tubes as when they first opened, taking good care of them. On the third Sunday of every month, the cafe holds a concert of SP records with a gramophone made in 1925, which was inherited from Mr. Mimasaka.

レコードに合わせて針もこんなに種類がいっぱい。この日は特別に竹針でラ・カンパネラをかけて頂きました。低音から高音域まで、透明感のあるきれいなサウンドに心が揺さぶられます。私のInstagramに動画を載せたので気になる方は、「@cafeali」で聴いてくださいね。

There are many different types of needles to suit each record. On this day, we were treated to a special performance of La Campanella with a bamboo needle. You will be impressed by the clear and clean sound from low to high frequencies.
